Geospatial PV Mapping (NIA_NPG_015)

15 July 2017

The introduction of the Feed in Tariff (FIT) has led to a significant number of PV residential panels connected to the Low Voltage (LV) network across large urban geographical areas. Residential PV panels are usually connected to the low voltage network without a DNO's prior knowledge, which makes it difficult to identify PV panel connection points.  As a result, DNOs have a limited capability of knowing where panels connection points to the LV network are, what is the potential in an area to add more panels, or whether there will be network management issues caused by a high PV concentration.

The project aims to utilise satellite imagery to identify existing rooftop solar installations. These datasets will be integrated with Ordnance Survey digital mapping and overlaid on our own network map. The aim to is to improve our modelling abilities, calculate potential PV output for existing PV installations, and eventually plan for a more secure electricity network.
