Vehicle to Grid (V2G) - the network impact of grid-integrated vehicles (NIA_NPG_014)

The electrification of heat and transport is one of the trends that disrupts the energy market, and is one of the key areas within our innovation strategy.

Transport accounts for around a quarter of UK greenhouse gas emissions and affects air quality at the roadside. That is why government is working to reduce emissions by promoting public transport choices, and encouraging a move to cleaner and lower carbon vehicles. With a target of nearly all new cars and vans to be zero emission by 2040, the UK is slowly adopting electric vehicles (EVs) as a new standard, widely seen by the industry as the next essential addition to their portfolio. There are already more than 11,000 public charging points across the UK, and we have Europe’s largest network of rapid charging points.

There is some understanding of the impact of electric vehicles as an extra load, during charging time. This was investigated as a part of Northern Powergrid’s Customer-led-network-revolution project and in projects undertaken by other DNOs. However the impact of bi-directional flow between electric vehicles and the network, created as vehicles provide services to the grid, are not currently well understood.

The V2G project studies these bi-directional flows, both the charging of the vehicle from the grid and its discharging to the grid, and the implications for the development of the network in the future. The project will be delivered by NUVVE, a developer of in-car chargers for vehicle-to-grid.
