Vonaq - Utility Pole Strength Measurement (NIA_NPG_001)

01 July 2017

For safety reason, utility poles are regularly tested for their condition. The technique used consists in hitting the pole with a hammer and listening for changes in sound to indicate decay. This system has its limits: as it is not a reliable method to test the buried part of the pole; and it is not entirely objective. This is not ideal and can create a great deal of unnecessary early replacement.

This project tests a method, already field-proven for wood poles in the telecoms sector and to adapt it to work on power distribution poles as many variances exist such as: different cable tensions, cable weights, pole sizes and attached equipment.
