NORTHERN POWERGRID PROVIDES UPDATE ABOUT ITS INVESTMENT WORK IN BRADFORD

14 October 2021

Northern Powergrid, the company responsible for the electricity network that powers everyday life for 8 million customers across 3.9 million homes and businesses in the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire is sharing dates for when the next sections of its work will take place as part of its £2.6 million scheme to improve the reliability and resilience of the electricity network serving around 45,000 homes and businesses to the south of Bradford.

Work began in mid-July to replace 17km (10.5 miles) of cables dating back to the 1960s along a 2.8km (1.7 mile) route which includes Staithgate Lane, Staygate Interchange, the A6177 Rooley Lane/Mayo Avenue/Chase Way/Birch Lane West, Rook Lane, Compton Street, A650 Tong Street slip road and Factory Street.

This work will ensure that the local electricity network is capable of meeting the existing demand for power as well as any future increase in demand as the population grows and more people swap to using electric vehicles, solar panels and heat pumps.

The work is being delivered on Northern Powergrid’s behalf by Excalon who will be carrying out the following work during October, November and December 2021.

  • There will be lane closures and multi-way traffic lights in operation on Staygate Interchange, Rooley Lane, Chase Way and Birch Lane West until mid-November, with some work taking place at weekends.
  • The southbound lane of Staithgate Lane will be closed between the junction of Staygate Interchange to around 100 metres past the junction of Dean Beck Avenue from 8pm on Friday 15 to 5am on Monday 18 October  and 8pm on Friday 22 to 5am on Monday 25 October. A diversion route will be in place along the A6177, Bierley Lane, Rockhill Lane, Wharfedale Road and Merrydale Road. The northbound lane leading from Merrydale Road/Transperience Way will remain open.
  • There will be some additional small-scale work taking place near the Shell Petrol Station at Staygate Interchange, near McDonalds and Yorkshire Building Society on Rooley Lane, at the junction of Rooley Lane/Hopefield Way and on Rook Lane at the junction of Factory Lane from the end of November until mid-December while Northern Powergrid installs and tests its new cabling.

The company’s £30 million investment work in west Bradford is ongoing. Although all of the company’s main engineering works in Wilsden, Sandy Lane, Heaton, Manningham and in and around the city centre are now complete, it will return in mid 2022 to carry out some small-scale work to remove equipment associated with the old underground network. Disruption will be minimal.
