NORTHERN POWERGRID ASKS PEOPLE TO THINK ABOUT SAFETY AS SCHOOLS BREAK UP AND THE REGION CELEBRATES THE JUBILEE

Street Party - Jubilee

Northern Powergrid, the company that powers everyday life for 8 million people, across 3.9 million homes and businesses in the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, is asking local communities to think about safety this half term as many of us celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Northern Powergrid’s Head of Health, Safety and Training, Gareth Pearson, said: “The weather’s improving, children are breaking up for half term and many of us will be celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee, meaning we’re all more likely to be outdoors over the coming days. It’s an ideal time to remind ourselves and the young people in our lives about the very real dangers of electricity and the power network.

Powering Future Generations“Taking time to watch our safety video and spending a few minutes chatting with your children about the potential hazards of electricity could be the most important thing you do.  Making sure that they know what to do if they accidentally kick a ball into a substation or see anything hanging from our power lines is vital. They must understand that retrieving any items themselves is extremely dangerous.

“We know that lots of events and celebrations will be happening across our region as we celebrate the Jubilee. That might include flying flags and hanging up bunting, we want to remind people to stay clear of power lines and substations when setting up marquees and decorating for street parties.

“Getting too close to power lines is extremely dangerous and could results in burns, electric shock or even death. It’s so important to remember that you don’t need to make contact with power lines as electricity can arc and jump gaps. Remember to look up, stay away and stay safe.

“We want everyone to know that if they spot anything potentially unsafe, they can call 105, the easy-to-remember free power cut number, speak to our 24-hour emergency contact centre team, who’ll be happy to send a team out to help. Doing the right thing and avoiding the extreme risks of live electricity will help ensure everyone remains safe and has fun during the school holidays and the Jubilee celebrations.”
