Smart Metering

Most homes and businesses in Great Britain will be offered smart meters by the end of 2020. Up to 53 million electricity and gas smart meters will be installed by energy suppliers and their introduction is set to change the way that you manage your energy consumption.

What do smart meters do?

Smart meters allow you to understand the amount of energy you are using around your home in almost real time and how much it is costing you. Smart meters are read automatically without the need for a Meter Reader to visit your home; this means your energy bill will be more accurate, with no need for estimated readings as your smart meter will communicate directly with your energy supplier. How do I get a smart meter?

What do smart meters mean for us?

As the electricity network operator for the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, we will benefit from smart meters in a number of ways as they will help us to help you. 

Smart meters will provide us with an opportunity to enhance our service to you, in particular during power cuts. We will also be able to manage the power network and our investment plans more efficiently by using the data from smart meters. The work we are now carrying out ahead of the acceleration at the end of 2017 of the smart meter installation programme is well under way. It includes staff training and the development of IT systems and processes to allow us to use the new smart metering data we will be able to access.

We are also working closely with suppliers to ensure the roll-out is carried out as efficiently as possible.
